Shawbridge AFC are proud members of the Stathclyde Saturday Morning Football League and currently play in the 1st. Division. This is our 9th season associated with the league and started off in the 2nd division of the then named Strathclyde Civil Service League. We gained promotion in our first season finishing second to Portcullis Utd. and have been in the league's top flight ever since.
Having started off as a five-a-side team in 1997 playing in the Townhead Pitz Sunday League we decided two years later to try and fill the void that playing fives couldn't by entering our team into an
eleven-a-side league. All we had to do was find the extra players. As most of the players came from or around the Shawbridge Street area so the name was born. In the beginning getting a team together proved to be very difficult however once the core of the team was established there was no looking back.
Over the years there have been many highs, such as coming from behind to beat Blochairn Star 5-2 in the Strathclyde Cup Final in 2005 and beating Windlaw 4-3 in the Joe McMenemy League Cup Final in 2001. However, there have also been some lows including our 4-3 defeat to Windlaw in the Strathclyde Cup Final of 2001 were we lost the decisive goal, a deflected throw-in, with 5 minutes to go. Another sore one was the 2-1 defeat in last year's Strathclyde Cup Final against Tynecastle were the winner was scored in injury time at the end of the 90 minutes after we had dominated much of the second half but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.
Football aside, a lot of lasting friendships have come out of playing for this wee Saturday Morning Amateur Football Team and some of the stories, laughs and dressing room banter has been unforgetable. Thats why no matter the outcome of the game or who was to blame our philosophy will never change.............................
C'mon the Shaws!!!!!
