03/10/09 Shawbridge 5 Blochairn Star 2 SSMFL Premier Division Hamilton Palace
Shawbridge came back from 2-0 down to secure an impressive 5-2 win over old rivals Blochairn Star at Hamilton Palace on Saturday. The Shaws started the game well but Blochairn raced into an early 2 goal lead after taking advantage of a high Shaws backline. David Cole crossed for Stevie Thomson to half the deficit with a powerful downward header before half-time. Blochairn were to rue an early chance in the 2nd half as shortly afterwards Mark Dyer put striker Barry Scally through who beat the last defender before calmly slotting past the keeper. 2-2. Shaws were winning the battles and their reward came when the Blochairn rear guard were caught flat footed as a diagonal through ball from Mikey Lafferty held up in the wind to land at Ian Dumbreck's feet with only the keeper to beat. He got there just before David Cole to slot the ball home and put the Shaws in front. Blochairn were then reduced to 10 men when their central midfielder was sent packing following his reaction to a Derek Scally tackle. The men from Royston rallied and had a couple of decent chances. The best of them fell to striker Heeps who was foiled by the left foot of Shaws keeper "Pidge" who sent the goal-bound effort past the post. Amazingly the referee gave a goal-kick leaving Blochairn understandably aggrieved. Two defensive errors by the Blochairn right back allowed a one on one situation for Barry Scally and Ian Dumbreck who both dispatched to make the final score 5-2. Following last week's come-back from 4-2 down to win 5-4 against Cumbernauld Town, this was another example of the Shaws fighting spirit and long may it continue. Overall, it was a deserved 3 points against a good Blochairn side and probably our best TEAM performance of the season so far. Hopefully we can kick on from here.
08/11/08 Shawbridge 5 Grennbank United 2 SSMFL Division 1 Hamilton Palace
Shawbridge made it 3 wins from 3 following their 5-2 win over Greenbank Utd. at Hamilton Palace on Saturday. The win moved the Shaws up to 5th in the table. A hat-trick from the excellent Barry Scally was added to by skipper Archie Bryce and David Cole to secure the points. Big Barry has returned to form in the last few weeks and his attitude is a reflection of that. His 3rd goal was a peach of a strike on the left foot from the edge of the box........vintage. Not to be outdone, captain Archie Bryce scored an over-head kick, his 2nd in 2 seasons! He didn't connect as sweetly as last seasons against Greenhills at the Murray but it was a quality finish none the less. Cole "the goal" popped up to seal the win late on with a trademark run and finsh. We could have scored more but Greenbank had their chances too. At 4-2 their big striker missed a sitter from 4 yards out following an excellent corner from the left. That could have changed the game as there was still 10 minutes left. Greenbank's delivery from corners and set pieces was excellent. Each one carried a threat as they were hitting dangerous areas with pace and whip. Overall, it was a well deserved win with good attacking play from the Shaws. We played some of our best attacking football of the season on Saturday so hopefully we can build on that. We looked vulnerable from corners and set-pieces but I think that was mostly due to the quality of the delivery from Greenbank. It is the only goal we have lost from a corner this season as we are normally disciplined at defending them. Special mention to stand in keeper Kevin Tait who had a very good game, making a few good saves and looking assured. Hopefully we can make itn 4 from 4 when we resume league duty!
