Star Man: Andy Allison

At last this boy is beginning to use his power and pace and thats exactly how he got his goal. Was a constant threat on the left flank with good delivery tomatch. Did the simple thing when required. An excellent overall performance. Be looking for moreof the same now.

With AS Airdrie two points ahead of Shawbridge before the start of play the incentive was there to beat the men from Lanarkshire in order to overtake them and move into fifth spot. With Stevie Thomson leaving to play junior with Larkhall Thistle, Stephen McShane still injured and Ryan Cassidy out with flu this left the Shaws with only one sub which was not ideal. However, there was still quality in the team to get the result we wanted.

As the boys made the long walk from Airdrie Leisure Centre they eventually came to the pitch at Central Park which is without doubt the worst in the first division. Apart from the slope like Mount Everest, invisible lines and the fact that someone had just ploughed it before kick-off it was all right! Credit to AS Aidrie as their normal pitch was called off thats why they had to use this one and since we had made the journey at least there was a game on. Same conditions for both teams and all that. Shawbridge settled in to their stride first and took control of the game early on. Although the park wasn't conducive to good football Shawbridge passed the ball well and were playing some decent stuff. We always seemed to have an extra man but I think that was down to good movement and early shifting of the ball. AS Airdrie were allowing us too much time on the ball and Kevin Tait was lapping it up displaying his excellent passing range with Andy Allison a constant outlet on the left. However after ten minutes a body blow for the Shaws. After receiving the ball from a shy Sturat McElveen collapsed in a heap clutching his left knee. It was clear he was in some distress and we all felt that he had ruptured his cruciate again. Thankfully this doesn't seem to be the case but there is a real chance he will be out for the remainder of the season which is a huge blow for the player and the club. Stephen Britt replaced Stuarty and his impact was immediate. In what must have been his first touch he held the ball up well inside the box before squaring to Scott McLaren who rifled home from twelve yards with the aid of a defection. Shaws one up after fifteen minutes. The response from AS Airdrie didn't materialise with Stevie Ross something of a spectator in goal. So it was no surprise when Shawbridge grabbed their second mid-way through the first half. A long ball from the right back position forced the AS Airdrie keeper to come out to clear but he failed to connect leaving the on-rushing Stephen Britt to slot home into the empty net. 2-0 Shawbridge. This provoked a better response from AS Aidrie who created one or two half chances but never forced Pidge into a save leaving Shawbridge comfortable at the break.

Half-Time: AS Airdrie 0 Shawbridge 2

The second half started in typical Shawbridge fashion with mis-placed passes and a general sluggishness about the team which was in total contrast to the first. After Mark Dyer failed to clear his lines the AS Airdrie midfielder found himself just inside the box where Wille Allison brought him down for a definite penalty. However, Pidge pulled off an excellent right handed save diving to his left to spare his gaffer's blushes. AS Airdrie seemed to have an extra man on the left and were getting some joy from that so Scott McLaren moved over to stem the tide. This seemed to work with Shawbridge soon back in command. after Scott McLaren moved to the left side of midfield h

Vale Utd................................1

This was the first meeting this season between Shawbridge and last years Division 1 title holders Vale Utd. Vale beat the unfortunate Greenhills Dynamo on goal difference last season with the Shaws taking third place just a point behind the eventual winners. After last seasons 3-2 away defeat to Vale after leading 2-0 at half-time the lads were determined to make up for it this time and boy did they.

The game started in a typically competitive fashion with meaty tackles raining in from both sides. However before the game really got going Shawbridge were forced into an early substitution when Stephen McShane pulled up after five minutes with calf trouble. The normally reliable big yetti said he heard a "pop" before he had to go off. Doesn't sound very good and he wasn't moving too freely either. Fingers crossed its nothing serious. Andy Allison replaced him with his brother Willie slotting into defence and David Cole moving to right midfield. Andy was gutted at being on the bench so he had plenty of time to prove the gaffer wrong. There was nothing much between the two sides early on with Shawbridge probably shading it as the Vale defence struggled to cope with the pace of Scally and McElveen up front. It was this combination that lead to the opening goal roughly half way through the first period. A ball in from the left arrived at Stuart McElveen's feet on the six yard line but with two or three Vale defenders surrounding him the most he could do was toe-poke the ball towards goal. The ball rebounded off the keeper and with the six yard box heavily crowded Barry Scally's out-stretched right foot diverted the ball into the net. Not the prettiest of goals but Shaws one up none the less. This forced the title holders to come at Shawbridge in search of the equaliser but this left space for Shawbridge as they looked dangerous on the break. Five minutes before the interval though Vale had two half chances to level. Firstly, their big number nine did well to make room for himself inside the box before his shot went a yard wide from a tough angle. Secondly, a good knock down at the back post seen Vale's other striker send a half volley from twelve yards towards the Shaws goal. A decent right hand save by Steven Ross sent the ball round the post for a corner but the Vale striker should have done better. So Vale finished the half looking the more likely to score but Shawbridge still one up.

Half-Time: Shawbridge 1 Vale Utd.  0

We knew the concentration would have to be spot on after the restart especially for the first fifteen minutes. But in typical Shawbridge fashion we started the second period sluggishly without giving Vale any real opportunities. Although Willie Allison gifted possession in a dangerous area when a simple clearance was the right option but a combination of tracking back and good tackling thwarted the danger. With the half rolling on Shawbridge improved and started to play some decent stuff so it was no surprise when the killer second arrived. Good work by Ryan Cassidy down the right flank seen him send a teasing ball in across goal for Stuart McElveen to slide in at the back post and slot the ball home from six yards. This seem to knock the stuffing out of Vale as Shawbridge went in search for more goals. The third soon followed after a cross field pass seen Stuart McElveen in acres of space on the left hand side. He had a clear run at goal but squared for Barry Scally for an easy tap in. Barry looked offside when the first ball was played but was clearly "inactive" at the time, that was until he made up ground to notch his second of the game! By this time the Shaws were opening up Vale at will and it was clear they had already given up the ghost. Another two quick fire goals from Stuarty sealed his

hat-trick to make it 5-0 with about fifteen minutes left. The frustration was getting to Vale and they were fortunate not to get two men sent off for seperate tackles, one of which was a real shocker but thankfully the Shaws player recovered. The final whistle couldn't come quick enough for Vale but things were about to get even worse for them. A great solo run from David Cole seen him ghost past the last defender after a good dummy run by Kevin Tait on the right. With only the keeper to beat Cole made no mistake ramming home from twelve yards for Shawbridge's sixth to compund Vale's misery. With time running out Vale grabbed a consolation after a defensive mix up between Stevie Thomson and keeper Stevie Ross. Vale's number nine took advantage of the mis-communication to beat Pidge at his near post with a powerful drive.

Full-Time: Shawbridge 6 Vale Utd. 1

Shaws manager Mark Dyer had this to say:

"Although Vale are not quite the team they were last season the fact that we beat them so convincingly was a huge boost for us. We were ruthless today especially in front of goal. I'm delighted for the boys as they worked really hard for this one and they got their just rewards. If we had this squad earlier in the season I'm certain we would have been up there challenging however the best we can do is retain the Strathclyde Cup and everyone at the club is desperate to make that happen."

Bishopgate.........................0

Shawbridge bagan their defence of the Strathclyde Cup at home to third division Bishopgate in the second round. With Stuart McElveen returning from suspension and Kevin Tait returning from the wilderness the squad is almost complete as we bid to regain the coveted trophy. The message before the game was simple. No complacency or the defence will have ended before it had really begun.

From the first whistle it was clear that Bishopgate were not here to make up the numbers. They hustled and harried as they tried to compete with a team two divisions above them. However once Shawbridge got into their stride it was apparent that the Bishopgate keeper would be the busier of the two. After about ten minutes the first real chance from Shawbridge came. A neat piece of interplay eventually saw a decent ball played into Stuart McElveen's feet just inside the box. A swift turn and shot was well saved by the Bishopgate keeper down to his left only for the on rushing David Cole to hammer home the rebound. 1-0 Shaws or so we thought. The referee decided that Coley was in an offside position much to our bewilderment and that of the Bishopgate team. An early let off for the third division side but the inevitable wasn't far away. Shortly afterwards a measured pass by Mark Dyer sent Barry Scally on his way down the left flank at pace. The Shaws number nine centred for David Cole to smash the ball home from eight yards. Shaws definitely one up this time. Bishopgate battled well but never really carried a goal threat as Stevie Ross was a spectator for most of the game. Shawbridge were playing some decent stuff and notably the delivery was good quality causing Bishopgate all sorts of problems. One example was an excellent corner whipped in by Derek Scally that ended up in the back of the net after hitting a Bishopgate defender on the line. However the referee decided that the defender was fouled by Barry Scally before the ball crossed the line. It could have been more in the first half but their keeper kept them in it with two or three good saves.

Half-Time: Shawbridge 1 Bishopgate 0

The massage at half-time was clear. This tie was by no means over so concentration was a must for the first fifteen minutes after the restart. The pattern of the game remained with Shawbridge dominating the proceedings however at 1-0 you are never secure. It was about ten minutes into the second half when the all important second goal came, and what a peach it was. Good work by the impressive Ryan Cassidy, in only his second game for Shawbridge, seen him crossing the ball in from the left hand side. Waiting about the penalty spot was Stuart McElveen who sent an acrobatic side scissor kick into the roof of the Bishopgate net leaving the keeper stranded. What a way to mark your return to the team after being out for twelve weeks. It really was an exquisite finish from a talented player with all bets now off for goal of the season. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Bishopgate as Shawbridge piled forward in search of more goals. The third was soon to follow and it was that man McElveen again. After finding himself in space sixteen yards out on the right of goal he sent a curler into the top left hand corner giving the keeper no chance. Another quality finish and you could see the confidence oozing from the wee man. Not content with that he decided to wrap up his hat-trick shortly afterwards. Again it was a good ball through by Ryan Cassidy into the left channel for the on-rushing McElveen. The keeper was out quick to block but a lovely wee dink with the left foot took it over the Bishopgate stopper and into the empty net. Sheer class. A finer treble you will struggle to see just showing what the Shaws have been missing in the last three months. I think the reason he didn't notch any more was the Klinsman dive into a mud puddle after the third that must have doubled his body weight!!! Shaws 4-0 up and it was just a case of how many. Bishopgate did themselves no favours by getting one of their men sent off for verbally having a go at the referee. With the tie secure Stephen Britt came on for David Cole and Kevin Tait replaced Ryan Cassidy. Shaws fifth came courtesy of striker Barry Scally. A fine ball in from brother Derek on the right seen Barry nip in front of the keeper to send a header into the back of the net. 5-0 and the whistle couldn't come quick enough for Bishopgate who's keeper had another two or three fine stops before the end. One left footed rasper by Derek Scally was brilliantly kept out by the keeper as he battled to keep the score down. The sixth and final goal came from prodigal son Kevin Tait. Back at the club for a third time he showed that he had lost none of that skill when he dropped the right shoulder before getting the ball onto his left foot twenty yards out. He then rifled a low shot into the left hand corner giving the keeper no chance. A perfect way to mark his return and indeed tie up the scoring.

Full-Time: Shawbridge 6 Bishopgate 0

Shaws manager Mark Dyer had this to say:

"We were pretty comfortable in the end but Bishopgate made us work especially in the first fifty minutes. I thought we played some good attacking football at times and our delivery into the box was excellent. I don't think I've seen a better hat-trick than the one Stuarty scored today, his finishing was exceptional. I'm also pleased that we kept a clean sheet and hopefully we can build on that in the coming weeks. Overall it was a good performance and with the squad taking shape we are looking forward to the third round tie against Scotsman."

Shaws lose narrowly to Dynamo

25/02/06 SSMFL Division 1 Hamilton Palace

Shawbridge.........................1 Star Man

B.Scally   Couldn't pick a star man so have given it to the

full team which is unusual considering we lost. Commitment and effort was outstanding from everyone. Should have taken at least a point from a good Dynamo side.

Greenhills Dynamo............2  Full Team

This game couldn't come quick enough since Greenhills inflicted the worst defeat in Shawbridge's sevenyear history just a few weeks ago. Although still not at full strength the incentive was there especially for the players who played in that game and more so for the ones who have been at the club for a long time. We had let ourselves and the club down that day and there couldn't be a repeat ever again.

The game started at a typically frantic pace with Greenhills having the better of the opening exchanges. They are very quick on the break and their two strikers have good movement so we knew they would create chances against any team. Their nippy number nine was first up following a break down the left. He was squared with only the keeper to beat from twelve yards out and thought he must have scored after drilling a fine first time shot towards the bottom left hand corner. However a brilliant right handed save by Stevie Ross denied the Dynamo front man. Shortly after Greenhills had another chance. This time it was their pacy number ten who drifted in from the left before hammering a low drive towards the bottom right corner that looked net bound. But "Pidge" was in inspired form as he stretched out a strong left hand to stop Greenhills taking the lead. Outstanding stuff from the Shaws stopper. Although we were matching Greenhills in the tackle their pace was causing us problems and after 20 minutes they took the lead. Their number 10 got to the ball before Shaws captain Archie Bryce on the right and he made for the box at pace. Willie Allison tried to cover but conceded a definate penalty before their man could pull the trigger. The number ten dusted himself down before beating Pidge at his bottom left corner with the Shaws keeper getting a finger tip to it. 1-0 Dynamo. This seem to jerk the Shaws into action as we started to get the upper hand in the game. After a high ball into the box the Greenhills keeper spilled the ball under pressure however Stephen Britt failed to capitalise and the chance was gone. The best chance of the half fell to captain Archie Bryce who was put through by a measured pass by Mark Dyer. After beating the offside trap Arch lobbed the keeper only to see his effort drift a yard wide of the left hand post. The signs were encouraging as we finished the half the stronger of the two.

Half-Time: Shawbridge 0 Greenhills Dynamo 1

Half-time saw some heated debate between the players and wether the points were valid or not it showed that we wanted to win this game. We started the second half as we finished the first but now all of a sudden we were getting the ball down and playing a bit. In addition we were getting some joy down the flanks and creating some real chances. A good piece of play seen the ball drift out wide to David Cole. He sent an excellent cross in for Barry Scally who blazed over from eight yards when he looked a cert to score. Then David Cole found himself through and had he got a bit of lift on his shot it would have been a certain goal but credit to the Dynamo keeper who was out quick to block. Shawbridge were winning battles all over the pitch as they continued to dominate and drive forward looking for the equaliser. But then the sucker punch came. Greenhills broke at pace down the right and a good cross saw their number nine in space who's shot was parried by Pidge only for the on rushing Dynamo sub Speedy to net with the rebound in what must have been close to his first touch. Shaws 2-0 down and thoroughly undeserved. The sense of injustice seemed to spur the Shaws men on and they went to a front three in an attempt to salvage something from the match. The introduction of trialist Ryan Cassidy payed dividend as he sent a superb cross in from the right that Barry Scally volleyed home in convincing fashion. This was by far a more difficult chance than he had earlier in the half but his contact this time was sweet giving the Dynamo keeper no chance. 2-1 game on. With twenty minutes to go Dynamo were desperately holding on for what would be a valuable three points in their title push. It was all Shawbridge from then on and David Cole had another chance after drifting in from the right. Instead of squaring he got the ball onto his left foot and went for a curler into the top corner but it went a couple of feet over. As the game went into the final minute there was an almighty goal mouth scramble and how the ball ended up in the Dynamo keepr's arms and not the back of the net I'll never know. The final whistle went shortly afterwards as the Greenhills players celebrated what must have been one of their hardest fought victories ever with their management team agreeing that we should have taken something from the game.

Full-Time: Shawbridge 1 Greenhills Dynamo 2

Shaws manager Mark Dyer had this to say:

"Lets not kid ourselves, Greenhills are a good side who may well go on to land the title. They are well organised, very quick on the break and have good movement up front so we knew it would be difficult. However I thought we more than matched them and deserved at least a point from the game. The effort from the boys was terrific and had we taken our chances it might have been a different story. With the league gone we must now focus on our defence of the Strathclyde Cup. We have several key players returning from injury and suspension just in time to begin our defence against third division Bishopgate and I can assure you we will be fighting tooth and nail to hang on to the coveted trophy."

Shaws return to winning ways at home to Shettleston.

11/02/06 SSMFL Division 1 Cathkin Park

Shawbridge......................4    Star Man: Willie Allison

W.Allison

D.Cole    Injury to Stevie Thomson forced Wille to play on the right of a back

B.Scally    three and he was solid there throughout. A wonderful solo effort early

S.Britt    in the first half underlined Wille's excellent all round performance.

Shettleston Utd.............1

This re-arranged fixture meant that we had to play at Cathkin Park which has not been a happy hunting ground for us this season but that was due to change after this game. The pitch itself was in poor condition and it was inevitable that it would cut up pretty quickly not allowing for much silky soccer. Anyway after last weeks debacle it was important we bounced back with a win and thats exactly what we did.

Shawbridge started the game well winning first and second balls and dominating play in the process. The first chance came very early on when Stephen Britt raced through with only the keeper to beat but his lob drifted wide of the keeper's left hand post. Then after 10 minutes Shawbridge got their just rewards. Willie Allison picked the ball up on the half way line on the right hand side and then made for the Shettleston goal. Having already beaten two players he evaded a final tackle on the 18 yard line before stepping into the box and drilling a low shot into the bottom left hand corner. An excellent solo effort to put the Shaws in front and deservedly so. Shawbridge pressed for the second and when Stephen Britt rounded the keeper we thought that was it but amazingly he blazed over from 8 yards. Move over Peter Van Vossen!!!! Shettleston battled hard and got themselves back into the game midway through the first half. A deep cross from the right back position looked to be going out but credit to the Shettleston forward who headed it back across goal leaving an easy finish for his strike partner from a couple of yards out. 1-1 game on. Shawbridge seemed to panic following this and suddenly easy passes were being mis-played and wrong options were being taken. This has been a disappointing feature of our play throughout the season. I can't stress the importance of getting back to the old Shawbridge mentality that if we lose a goal then so what as we know we are capible of scoring at the other end thus removing the need to panic and change the way we play. Easier said than done. 10 minutes before half-time Shawbridge were back in front. Willie Allison spotted a run and delivered an excellent ball from the right back position following a quick free-kick. The run was made by an unmarked David Cole who latched onto the pass and cooly volleyed home form 8 yards out. A nice finish from the Shaws winger.

Half-Time: Shawbridge 2 Shettleston Utd 1

The message at half-time was simple, keep the concentration and more of the same and thats exactly what we got. It was one way traffic with Shettleston offering little in the way of attack but the all important third goal wasn't forthcoming as Shawbridge passed up chance after chance. Two of the biggest culprits were Davie Farquhar and Stephen Britt who amazingly both missed from close range when it seemed easier to score. However the decisive goal came courtesy of Barry Scally who netted from close range after some good build up play. Shaws all time leading scorer has been sorely missed through suspension but he marked his return in typical fashion and lead the line well throughout. This signalled the end of the game as a contest with the three points secured but credit to the men from the east end for making us fight for it. A fourth was added 5 minutes from time by Stephen Britt who had an easy tap in to complete the goalscoring.

Full-Time: Shawbridge 4 Shettleston Utd 1

Shaws manager Mark Dyer had this to say:

"After last week the most important thing was to bounce back with a win and we knew that Shettleston wouldn't make it easy so we are pleased with the three points. Although the perfomance wasn't great the work rate was better and I was encouraged at the amount of chances we created, something that was non-existant last week. We still look a bit disjointed at times especially at corners and set pieces but that is something we will work on. You don't get a victory handed to you in this league so credit to the boys for going out there and getting it."

Shaws lose 1-0 to league leaders Windlaw

14/01/06 SSMFL Division 1 Barlia Astroturf, Castlemilk

Windlaw..................1  Star Man: Willie Allison

Willie's all round performance on Saturday was excellent. His defending,   Shawbridge............0  tackling and passing was faultless and like one or two other of the men,

didn't deserve to be on the losing side.

As Greenbank Utd. were involved in the West and Greenhills were involved in the Scottish so brought about the re-arranged meeting of these old rivals in what proved to be, as always, a very tight encounter. League leaders Windlaw must have been full of confidence going into this game following their 5-1 victory over Blochairn Star prior to the Xmas break and with Shawbridge missing both Barry Scally and Stuart McElveen through suspension it was always going to be tough.

The game started at a typically frantic pace with some tasty tackles flying in from both sides. Windlaw seemed to settle into their pattern first and had the best of the first 15 minutes. However, their only real chance of note came from an attempted lob which Stevie Ross acrobatically tipped away. Following a typical rant by big Pidge at how easy the chance was made the Shaws men seemed to realise that they had to step up a gear or perhaps suffer the same fate as Blochairn. Sudddenly first and second balls were being won and consequently we went on to dominate the remainder of the half. Despite this we failed to register or even force Lunny into a save however we came agonisingly close on two occasions. Firstly, Archie Bryce saw a glancing header rebound off the post following a great delivery by Derek Scally from a free kick deep inside the Windlaw half. Then shortly after this Archie saw another header cleared off the line following a corner from the left. The Shaws captain lead by example and couldn't have been any more unlucky unless he forgot to put on the winning lottery numbers that night! The Castlemilk man would have loved to have scored but it wasn't meant to be and we should have known then it wasn't going to be our day.

Half-Time: Windlaw 0 Shawbridge 0

At the half-time talk it was a case of "more of the same" but Shaws didn't produce a second half performance to match the first and within 2 minutes of the restart we were 1-0 down. An excellent overall defensive display was over shadowed by a couple of lapses in concentration and this was one of them. After a straight forward pass the Windlaw striker suddenly found himself in acres of space and bearing down on Pidge's goal and from 16 yards out he rifled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. Although he had all the time in the world it was a great finish from the Windlaw man. Suddenly Windlaw were in the ascendency and almost made it two when nippy forward Eck outpaced Steven McShane only to see his lob rebound off the top of the bar. Unlike the first half we were giving Windlaw too much time and space and they were taking advantage. However, Shaws were handed a lifeline when Andy Allison was adjudged to have been impeded in the box by the Windlaw defender after both had went to ground. At first glance it looked soft but the Shaws striker claims he was definitely stopped from getting to the ball. Andy grabbed the ball and placed it for the spot kick. Having bagged a treble last week he must have been confident he would score........................ but he didn't. He screwed the ball low past Lunny's left hand post in what summed up our day. Brian Trainer came on up front and Gordon McLaughlin came on at left mid in an attempt to get something from the game. With 10 minutes to go Windlaw's left back Willie was sent off for a second bookable offence giving us one last glimmer of hope. Paul Gallagher was thrown up front in a last ditch attempt for a leveller. However, although we pressed the Windlaw goal forcing a succession of corners and free kicks our delivery let us down at the vital moment and a tame diving header from Trainer was as near as we came to an equaliser.

Full-Time: Windlaw 1 Shawbridge 0

Overall, it was a hard one to take against our old rivals as we could have thrown ourselves right into the melting pot had we got something from the game. A lack of cutting edge up front was all so apparent and what team wouldn't miss the quality of Barry Scally and Stuart McElveen. However, on the day I still feel we deserved something from the game especially after our first half performance but we let ourselves down a wee bit in the second. That's not to say we played badly in the second it just wasn't good enough to overcome a team like Windlaw. As for the penalty miss..........................no comment.

(4-4-2): Ross, Allison W, McShane, Thomson, Bryce (c), Farquar (McLaughlin), Scally D, Gallagher, Dyer (Scott), Allison A,

  Britt (Trainer).
